Let’s begin with a bold statement:
Nothing elevates an outfit better than the right accessories.
While we love a good watch, the right pair of glasses will do wonders for your look—especially oversized glasses frames.
If you want to add personality and flair to your look, oversized glasses frames for men are the way to go. Below, we’ve picked three of our favorite pairs to get you started. But first, let’s dive into some guidelines that you can use to select the right frames for your face shape, hair color, eye color, and skin tone.
Factors to Consider When Picking Oversized Glasses Frames for Men
Even though we believe that men should wear anything that makes them feel stylish, it’s always good to have a starting point. Men’s fashion tends to have some guidelines to follow that can help you make decisions about your clothing and accessories—including your glasses frames.
There are four different factors to consider when choosing the right oversized glasses:
- Face shape
- Skin tone
- Hair color
- Eye color
Face Shape
Face shape is one of the most important considerations when choosing your oversized glasses frames because the shape of your frames can complement your face!
There are six common face shapes:
- Square
- Round
- Diamond
- Heart
- Oval
- Triangle
Here’s the thing: It’s rare to find someone with a face shape that falls solely into one of these categories. Normally, a person’s face will share characteristics from several face shapes—for example, a taller forehead combined with a rounder chin. The best you can do is choose frames that suit the face shape that yours resembles the most.
For square faces, most frame shapes will work. However, since square faces tend to be the widest around the jaw and the forehead, rounded frames that smooth out the angles of the face will often look best.
Round faces feature softer, curved lines with a similar width from top to bottom. People with round faces also tend to have fuller cheeks. In this case, angular or square frames help balance out the round shape of the face.
Diamond faces, which are the rarest shape, tend to be more narrow toward the forehead with angular jaw lines and defined cheekbones. Similarly to square faces, diamond faces benefit the most from rounder or softer frames, and this counteracts the sharp angles and highlights the attributes of your face.
Next is the heart face—a narrow chin, higher cheekbones, and a wider forehead characterize this shape. Those with a heart-shaped face are lucky when it comes to glasses since they can wear just about any shape. However, a frame that flares out is the best shape to go with. It also helps to choose frames with a deeper base to compliment a wider forehead.
Oval faces are another face shape that can get away with wearing just about any oversized frame shape. Oval faces typically have wider and higher cheekbones that become more narrow toward the forehead. Our only recommendation is to avoid narrow frame designs—they might make an oval face appear longer than usual.
The last face shape is the triangle face. Triangle faces have a wider, square jawline similar to a square face. However, the primary difference is the narrow forehead that forms a triangle down to the jawline. The best way to balance a triangle-shaped face is to use a wider frame—this adds width to the top half of the face and balances out a wider jawline. Aviators, for example, are a great style for triangle-shaped faces.
Remember that these are only guidelines—if there’s a style of glasses outside of these guidelines that you love, wear them!
Skin Tone
Your skin tone can affect which colors or patterns look best on you. There are two types of skin tones: Cool and warm.
The rule of thumb is that cooler tones work best with cooler-colored frames and warm tones work best with warmer-colored frames.
For example, if you have a warm skin tone, warmer colors such as brown, gold, red, or green work great to compliment your skin tone. Conversely, a cool skin tone works better with cooler colors: Black, gray, blue, and tortoise.
Hair Color
Hair color is another attribute you can use to find the oversized glasses that suit you best.
In general, we see five common hair colors:
- Brown
- Blonde
- Black
- Gray
- Red
From there, we also see varying shades of warmth. For example, light brown or dark brown hair. Just like with your face shape, it’s best to go with the color that most applies to you—even if your hair doesn’t fall directly into one of these five colors.
People with brown hair should opt for blue, black, red, or gold-colored frames. For blonde hair, we recommend black, pink, blue, or purple frames. Black hair works with many different colors, but black, bronze, rose gold, and blue frames are our favorites. Gray hair has a lot more variance—this depends on how gray the hair has gone so far. However, we like floral patterns, reds, and purples for frame colors. Red hair has a ton of natural warmth—we recommend pairing it with green, reddish brown, tortoiseshell, or any other warm neutral color.
Eye Color
Your eyes are directly behind your glasses—it makes sense that your eye color would be important in choosing the right frame color!
We typically see three different eye colors (with varying shades of each): Blue, brown, and green.
Blue eyes look great paired with similarly blue frames and gray frames. However, tortoiseshell and brown are great choices if you want to create a bit of contrast.
Brown eyes vary greatly in warmth—some people have darker brown eyes, while others appear lighter in color, such as hazel. Deep brown eyes pair well with tortoiseshell, green, or gold. If you’ve got hazel eyes, we recommend gray or green frames.
Green eyes work well with gold or brown tones. If you prefer to create some contrast, you’ll want to go with a pink or purple colored frame.
